Job Purpose:

To lead a team of workshop fitters in maintaining, repairing, and preparing plant hire equipment to the highest standard of safety, reliability, and quality. 

Reporting to and under the instruction of the Workshop Supervisor, a workshop team leader will ensure that daily operations within the workshop are carried out safely and efficiently, adhering to company procedures, safety regulations and service standards.  

Working under the direction of and reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, a workshop team leader is a key part of the workshop team, ensuring that all company standards, procedures and processes are adhered to, for the safe and effective performance of the workshop.  The Team Leader fosters a positive and safe working environment, by promoting the Company’s core values

Main Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Coordination
Support the Workshop Supervisor to deliver the Workshop and Yard objectives (including absence cover).
Lead and support a team of workshop fitters in day-to-day tasks.
Allocate jobs and resources effectively to meet service and turnaround targets.
Assist with recruitment, selection and onboarding
Mentor and train new and existing team members and apprentices.
Conduct 6-monthly personal development reviews (PDR’s) of team members, highlighting training opportunities, areas of improvement and offering continuous support to achieve set goals
Communicate effectively with the Workshop Supervisor regarding workload, progress, and issues.
Communicate effectively and liaise with Hire Desk, Workshop Control, Yard maintenance, Transport, etc.
 
Maintenance & Repairs
Carry out works including but not limited to; Services, Pre Delivery Inspections (PDI), Post Hire Inspections (PHI), 12 monthly inspections, Repairs. 
Ensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard and prepared for hire in line with company process and standards.
 
Health & Safety
Promote and ensure compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
Conduct regular checks to maintain a safe working environment (e.g., toolbox talks, risk assessments, PPE compliance).
Report and investigate any accidents, incidents, or near misses promptly.


Quality & Compliance
Ensure all works are completed in accordance with company procedures, quality standards, and customer requirements.
Maintain accurate and timely records of service, repairs, and parts used on Syrinx.
Ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in a clean and serviceable condition.
 
Process & Improvement
Support continuous improvement initiatives in the workshop, including lean practices and process reviews.
Monitor and contribute to the improvement of productivity and efficiency within the team.

Skills and attributes:

  • Proven experience in a workshop fitter or plant maintenance role (plant hire industry preferred).
  • Experience leading a small team or mentoring colleagues.
  • Ability to motivate the team to deliver quality performances.
  • Strong technical knowledge of plant and construction equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and service bulletins.
  • Understanding of health and safety legislation and practices in a workshop environment.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication abilities.
  • Competent in using maintenance software and job tracking systems (preferred but not essential).
  • Relevant qualifications in plant mechanics or mechanical engineering (NVQ, City & Guilds or equivalent).

Essential Requirements and qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance or equivalent
  • Proven experience in a similar role, preferably within the construction industry with a strong understanding of various types of construction equipment.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Full Driving Licence
